Ethnic group Costa Rica

The indigenous culture of Costa Rica dates back to pre-Columbian or pre-Hispanic times, when up to eight ethnic tribes coexisted in Costa Rica, a country located north of Nicaragua and southeast of Panama.

These native populations have survived to this day and are known as the Cabécares, Bribris, Ngäbe, Huetares, Borucas, Térrabas, Malekus and Chorotegas.

All these tribal groups are scattered among a total of 24 territories throughout the country and it is estimated that there are up to six indigenous languages of Costa Rica. In the 2011 census, the result was that there were more than 100,000 indigenous inhabitants in the country.
